If you’ve ever thought about trying a triathlon but weren’t sure where to begin, Leon’s Triathlon may be the perfect first step. For decades, new athletes have chosen this event as their very first triathlon—not just because of the course, but because of the heart behind it.
Hosted each June in Northwest Indiana, just 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, Leon’s Triathlon is known for being incredibly beginner-friendly. The course is fast, flat, and completely traffic-free, giving first-timers the confidence to focus on their own race without the extra stress of hills, cars, or complicated turns.
This iconic Chicagoland triathlon offers a calm swim in Wolf Lake (~69°F), a smooth bike course on a memorial highway, and a scenic run lined with over 1,000 American flags. It’s a patriotic, inspiring backdrop that lifts your spirits every step of the way. Many athletes say the course feels less like a competition and more like a celebration—especially with active military participants racing alongside you and cheering you on.
What truly makes Leon’s special, though, is the atmosphere. It’s a race built on respect, gratitude, and community. From volunteers to longtime athletes to first-time racers, everyone shows up with the same goal: to support one another. Whether you’re attempting your first triathlon or coming back to chase a personal best, you’ll feel that encouragement from the moment you arrive to the moment you cross the finish line.
We believe triathlon should be accessible to everyone, and we work hard each year to make sure newcomers feel welcome, prepared, and inspired. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to try your first triathlon—this is your sign.
Join us this June for a race filled with purpose, community, and the courage to start something new.
We’ll be right there cheering you on.
