Aaron Amptmeyer, Daniel Drexler, Leon Wolek, and Tom Kuhlenschmidt
It is with heavy hearts that we pause to honor the life of Detective Aaron Amptmeyer, who passed away unexpectedly on August 8, 2025, at the age of 44. Aaron was not only a beloved husband, father, son, and brother—he was also a dedicated police officer, a trusted leader, and a loyal friend to many.
Aaron began his career in law enforcement in 2005, serving with distinction in Gary, later in Dyer, and most recently in St. John, Indiana. Rising to the role of Detective and Commander of the Northwest Regional SWAT Team, he led officers from 11 departments across Lake County. His leadership, problem-solving skills, and steady presence left a lasting mark on those who served alongside him.
But Aaron’s story extends far beyond his badge. His personality was warm and magnetic—he had a special way of lighting up a room, making people laugh, and helping everyone feel valued. He loved sunshine, adventures, good food, and time spent with the people who mattered most.
Above all, Aaron was a devoted family man. He cherished his daughter Holland, who was the light of his life. Whether designing her hairstyles, building forts, or playing Barbies, Aaron’s role as a “girl dad” brought out the biggest twinkle in his eye. His love for his daughter was boundless, and he embraced fatherhood with joy, tenderness, and pride.
To describe Aaron is to list the qualities of a life well-lived:
Leader. Helper. Warrior. Loyal son. Loving friend. Girl dad.
Aaron will be dearly missed, but his legacy continues. The best way to honor his memory is to carry forward the spirit of who he was—by leading with courage, helping others, showing loyalty, making people laugh, and cherishing every moment with those we love.
At Leon’s Triathlon, we honor heroes like Aaron who give so much of themselves in service, family, and community. His life is a reminder that behind every uniform is a person of immeasurable heart and humanity.
We are grateful for his service. We are inspired by his love. And we will remember him always.
