My dog, Bowser. I had to say goodbye to him almost exactly one year ago this Saturday. He was only seven years old, but in that time, he became so much more than a pet. As a former police officer, I went through some of the hardest and darkest times of my life, and Bowser was there through all of it. He was my constant companion, my hiking partner, my travel buddy, and my best friend. He truly was my “ride or die.”

Anyone who knew Bowser loved him. He had that rare ability to bring joy wherever he went, and I was incredibly fortunate to experience the unconditional love that only a soul dog can give. Not everyone gets that kind of connection in their lifetime, and I know how lucky I was to have him.

Yesterday, my memories from previous years popped up, including a photo I had taken of Bowser sitting on the steps in front of the flags. Seeing that picture reminded me of a tradition we shared.

For years, I believed the race was exclusively for military participants, so rather than registering, Bowser and I would come out early the day before the event and run the course together. The beach was our favorite playground, and the race route made those adventures even more special.

As I learned more about the meaning behind the race and what it honors, it became even more meaningful to us. It was an honor to run that course, knowing what it stood for and the sacrifices it recognized. Those mornings with Bowser remain some of my most cherished memories.

Not everyone gets that kind of connection in their lifetime, and I know how lucky I was to have him.
