Although triathlon is an individual sport, a team environment promotes a sense of community in training and lifestyle.
Beginner triathletes may find the transition to team swimming awkward. You will be responsible for following a specific etiquette when training with other swimmers.
As a lane leader, for example, you are responsible for understanding the workout set provided by the coach and keeping everyone on pace with intervals. For example, a workout may be 10x100 yards freestyle on 1:45 (four lengths of the pool 10 times, on the interval of one minute and 45 seconds). As lane leader, you need to finish comfortably under that time to catch your breath and keep everyone behind you in sync, also. If you are not confident that you can maintain a consistent and strong set, it is better you set yourself in the middle or behind the pack.
It is inevitable that you will also need to pass a swimmer in front of you during a set. The etiquette is to gently tap the feet of the swimmer in front of you. The swimmer should then continue to the wall, pause and allow you to assume his position and continue swimming after the pass.
Some clubs have specific "unwritten rules" during training. For example, if you are a beginner triathlete, make sure that your bike group is of a similar level. Triathlon teams will usually have groups based on level. For example, Group "A" is for advanced riders, Group "B" is for intermediate and Group "C" is for beginners. If you choose to ride with a more advanced group, it may expect you to "pull." For example, cyclists bike in a pack with an individual in front and behind. The last cyclist in the pack is expected to go to the top of the group and "pull" and lead. This allows each cyclist an opportunity to have a break and catch his breath while in the pack. Pulling in a pack of cyclists is more tiring as it requires more energy to break the wind and keep a tempo for the pack.
There is also a certain etiquette with running training. Similar to biking groups, running groups are formed according to “pace.” Pace is is the general time an individual can run in one mile. Each group will usually have pockets of runners either moving ahead or behind during the workout. This is normal. Find which group suits you best. Do not carry loose change with you in your shorts. The jiggling noise coins make can be an annoyance and distraction to group members during a workout. It's better to carry a credit card or cash.
Find members within your club who share a similar goal. For example, if you are training for an Iron-distance race (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run), you may not be maximizing team-training benefits if you work out with members preparing for a sprint-distance race (800-meter swim, 16-mile bike, 3.2-mile run). Ensuring that you have similar-level training partners will foster a team-oriented atmosphere and make training more enjoyable.
